Just Wizards

Wizards, sorcerers, magicians, they’re all able to pull off amazing, supernatural feats with their words and their wands, like passing you that last slice of pizza from across the room without having to get up. But sometimes, the true magic behind a good magical character isn’t what they can do, but how and why they do it, putting us all under a spell that keeps them in our hearts and minds forever. The Unlikely Magic of Galavant

Who would have thought it would actually work? An epic self-aware medieval comedy musical extravaganza on network TV sounds like a disaster about to happen, yet Galavant just finished its second season on ABC with blood on its sword and a song in its heart. After lackluster ratings in its first season, most prognosticators said it would never get a renewal. But, whether due to ABC’s relationship with Disney and Alan Menken, or to the show’s nature as a limited series that fits perfectly in the otherwise pretty dead month of January, Galavant defied the odds and came back from the dead (much like a certain character this season) to charm us once again. Box Seat: Matilda

As a 20-something, I have a lot of conversations with my friends about growing up, being adults, and how much it sucks most of the time. Life gets complicated after college, and it promises to just keep getting more difficult. Looking to the future can sometimes be a bleak exercise, where the road ahead seems either completely unknowable, or much too predictable. Either way, it looks pretty hopeless. I have often felt that way, but I got a jolt of hope recently when I went to see Matilda, the Musical on Broadway. Continue reading
